An unusual view of Andromeda, or M31, the nearest galaxy to our own Milky Way. Why unusual? Because this is as seen by ESA’s Herschel infrared space observatory. Sensitive to the far-infrared light from cool dust mixed in with gas, Herschel reveals some of the very coldest dust in the galaxy – only a few tens of degrees above absolute zero – coloured red in this image.
