According to the 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) released by United Nations, more than 270 million people in India moved out of poverty in the span of 10 years since 2005-06.

The Report detailed that India’s poverty rate came down to 28% from 55% during the period.

The report also stated that around 546 million people in South Asian countries are multidimensionally poor.

The MPI was developed in 2010 by the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the United Nations Development Programme.

The MPI uses different factors to determine poverty beyond income-based lists. It replaced the previous Human Poverty Index. The global MPI is released annually by OPHI.
