Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer Toyota has filed a patent for its flying car.

According to an article published in AutoGuide, Toyota Engineering and Manufacturing North America (TEMA) has filed a patent application for an advanced flying car with wheels that could double as rotary wings.

The patent is primarily for a “dual mode vehicle, wheels for the vehicle and a method of transitioning the vehicle from a land mode to a flight mode.”

The patent is described to have wheels with rotor blades, which would let it to take off straight up. Each of the wheels would be powered by an electric motor fed by a system that would produce sufficient electric power to drive them.

A patent is a form of intellectual property. It gives its owner the right to exclude others from making, using, selling, and importing an invention for a limited period of time.

In most countries patent rights fall under civil law and the patent holder needs to sue someone infringing the patent in order to enforce their rights.

In some industries Patents are an essential form of competitive advantage; in others they are irrelevant.
