Banks in India have recently started sending summons to defaulters via WhatsApp and emails in scenarios where borrowers attempt to escape traditional summons (i.e. notice via postal service).

One of the popular banks in India HDFC has reportedly sent approximately 214 court summons via WhatsApp and email in the last couple of months.

The summons were directed through courts in states include Assam, Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.

This particular approach follows a Bombay High Court ruling in June which stated banks could use WhatsApp to send legal notices to defaulters.

Majority of the summons were associated to bounced cheques, specified the report, adding that the summons can either be sent by a bank or court.
