Society for Science: Indian-origin Dr.Ramakrishnan to head Britain’s Royal Society

Indian-origin Nobel laureate Dr. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has been named as the President of the prestigious Royal Society of UK.

According to reports, Dr. Ramakrishnan will succeed Paul Nurse as the Royal Society president from December 2015 to head the prime science organisation of the world.

Ramakrishnan, who has been met with the most noteworthy honor, was chosen by around 1,200 Royal Society Fellows who had sent their postal polls.

The board of trustees informed that it has unanimously picked Ramakrishnan, who got more than 98 per cent of votes.

“Considering I’m an immigrant who came here generally late in life just 16 years prior, it is an impression of the brilliant openness that the Royal Society has shown ever since its inception,” Ramakrishnan said.

Dr. Ramakrishnan was born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, and studied biological science in the US.

Dr Ramakrishnan imparted the science Nobel Prize in 2009 with Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath.

In 2010, Dr. Ramakrishnan was honored by Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award.
