Dutch MP Geert Wilders has cancelled a planned cartoon competition for caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad amid extensive protests.

Wilders said in statement that he did not want innocents to be put in danger by the contest he had planned for November.

“My point about the intolerant nature of Islam has been proved again by this,” Wilders added.

Wilders has been leader of the Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid ) since he founded it in 2006.

Wilders is the Parliamentary leader of his party in the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer).

Wilders is best known for his criticism of Islam; his views have made him a controversial personality in the Netherlands and overseas.
