President Jim Yong Kim completed his two-day visit to Bangladesh with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The World Bank has committed close to half a billion dollars to help Bangladesh provide health and education for the Rohingya refugees. #communitiesandrefugees #SDGs #endpoverty

Yesterday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and I visited Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh—the largest refugee camp in the world. More than 700,000 Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar have taken shelter there since August 2017, and more arrive each day. We heard heartbreaking stories of rape, arson attacks, taking land, and other horrific acts of violence. Yet, these courageous people stand resolute in their desire to return home.

We must work for political solutions, but right now they deserve the kind of support we can provide in terms of health care, education, and basic Infrastructure. The World Bank is providing up to $480 million in grants to help Bangladesh provide these services.

More will be needed. We’re calling upon the international community to join our efforts to help the Rohingya until they can return safely, voluntarily, and with dignity to their home.
