India decided to stop its share of water from the eastern rivers of the Sapta Sindhu region to Pakistan on Thursday.

The decision comes in the aftermath of the suicide bombing in Kashmir which killed 40 CRPF troopers and which was claimed by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit.

Water has always been a hot-button issue for Pakistan and Islamabad has always raised the issue of “unfair water-sharing” from India in its dialogue.

Current Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted that Under the leadership of (Prime Minister Narendra Modi), their government has decided to stop their share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. They will divert water from eastern rivers and supply it to our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

However, a ministry official has clarified that Gadkari has only reiterated what he has been saying in the past. “He is talking about diverting India’s share of Indus water which was going to Pakistan – and he has always been saying this,” the official said.
