For the first time ever, the European Commission President is a woman. Ursula von der Leyen got Parliament’s approval for the European Commission post in July, 2019.

She served in the federal government of Germany from year 2005 to 2019 as the longest-serving member of Angela Merkel’s cabinet.

She is a member of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its EU counterpart, the European People’s Party (EPP).

On 2 July 2019, von der Leyen was proposed by the European Council as the candidate for the office of President of the European Commission.

She was elected by the European Parliament on 16 July and she is the first woman to become President of the European Commission.

Female representation in the current European Commission is the highest it has ever been: in addition to von der Leyen, the current composition of the Commission comprises 11 female members and 15 male members.
