On this day: 21 October 2001, ESA astronaut Claudie Haigneré was launched on Soyuz TM-33. Already the first French woman in space (visiting the Mir space station in 1996 as part of the Russian-French Cassiopée mission), this flight made her the first European woman to visit the International Space Station, on her Andromède mission.
