You’re watching a composite movie created by overlaying two sets of images from the LASCO coronagraph on the ESA/NASA SOHO solar observatory (with a tiny image of the Sun from SDO/AIA placed at centre). This movie shows two large coronal mass ejections that occurred on 6 & 10 September and that reached Earth a few days later. Toward the end of the movie, the image is clouded with ‘snow’, which are high-energy protons associated with the second ejection bombarding the CCD cameras. Our Sun is an awesome source of power!
