Next month, the squad of space-borne instruments tasked with monitoring Earth’s energy balance gets a new member. Observations from this latest addition will help provide a critical dataset for Earth’s “energy budget” — the balance between energy received from the Sun, and the amount of energy emitted by the Earth as thermal radiation.
