India had witnessed several severe train accidents in recent past. India’s deadliest train accidents were the Bihar train disaster (at least 500 killed), the Firozabad rail disaster (at least 350 killed), the Gaisal train disaster (at least 280 killed) and the Khanna rail disaster (at least 210 killed).

The 1981 Bihar accident befallen after a train wrecked and fell into river of Bagmat and it killed at least 500 people. At least 300 were killed in a 1995 collision between two trains in Uttar Pradesh.

The 1999 Gaisal train tragedy killed about 280 after trains crashed in West Bengal.

Here’s a list of WORST train tragedies occurred in India.

1. Amritsar Train Accident, 19 October 2018

At least 50 people were killed and several injured in Amritsar’s Jora Phatak train accident. The train plowed into a crowd who were watching the Vijaya Dashami festival celebrations near the railway track. The Amritsar train tragedy is one of the recent incidents.

2. Kushinagar Train Accident, 26 April 2018

At least 13 children were killed and several injured in a tragic Kushinagar train accident. A school bus carrying roughly 25 school children collided with a fast-moving train.

3. Khanna Train Accident 26 November 1998

The Khanna train accident took place on 26 November 1998 near Khanna on the Khanna-Ludhiana section of India’s Northern Railway in Punjab when the Calcutta-bound Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Express collided with six derailed coaches of the Amritsar-bound Frontier Mail which were lying in its path.

At least 212 passengers were killed. The initial derailment was caused by a broken rail.

4. Gaisal Train Accident, 2 August, 1999

The Gaisal train accident took place on 2 August 1999, when two trains carrying nearly 2,500 passengers collided at the remote station of Gaisal Uttar Dinajpur West Bengal. It killed at least 290 passengers.

5. Firozabad Train Accident, 20 August 1995

The Firozabad train accident took place on 20 August 1995 near Firozabad on the Delhi-Kanpur section of India’s Northern Railway when a train collided with another train. It killed at least 300 people.

6. Bihar Train Accident, 6 June 1981

The Bihar train accident took place on June 6, 1981. A passenger train carrying more than 800 passengers derailed and plunged into the river Bagmati while it was crossing a bridge.

Estimates of overall deaths range from 500 to 800. The Bihar train derailment is one of the deadliest train accidents ever witnessed by India.
