According to an official data released by the Indian Railways, around 49,790 people have lost their lives between 2015 and 2017 on railway tracks in the country after being hit by trains.

The data revealed that the majority of the railway deaths (7,908) were reported from the Northern Railway zone.

The railway track deaths take place due to trespassing, avoiding over-bridges, violating instructions and using mobile phones when crossing railway tracks.

India had witnessed several severe railway accidents in recent past. India’s deadliest Train accidents were the Bihar train disaster (at least 500 killed), the Firozabad rail disaster (at least 350 killed), the Gaisal train disaster (at least 280 killed) and the Khanna rail disaster (at least 210 killed).

The 1981 Bihar accident befallen after a train wrecked and fell into river of Bagmat and it killed at least 500 people. At least 300 were killed in a 1995 collision between two trains in Uttar Pradesh.

The 1999 Gaisal train tragedy killed about 280 after trains crashed in West Bengal.
