India-Sri Lanka Relations: Indian fishermen will be shot if they cross border, says Sri Lankan PM

Only a week in front of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka, his counterpart Prime Minister Ranil Wickramesinghe has started a controversy by saying that Indian fishermen will be shot if they cross border.

“If someone tries to break into my home, I can shoot. If he gets killed, law permits me to do that, this is our waters,” Sri Lankan Prime Minster said an interview to a Tamil news channel on Friday.

“Sri Lankan Navy is only acting according to law when it fires at Indian fishermen entering Lankan waters and thusly they ought to keep away,” Wickramesinghe said.

Ranil Wickramesinghe feels that shooting of fishermen does not amount to human rights infringement.

Opposition parties are demanding PM Naredra Modi to react on it. Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, “what kind of good days are these that now even Sri Lanka has started warning us.”

However, PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka on March 13-14 and hold gatherings with President Maithripala Sirisena and other senior leaders.
