The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam has used a colonial-era emergency law to ban face masks after months of angry protests.

Why Hong Kong Banned Face Masks After Months of Protests?

According to reports, protesters have often worn face masks to hide their identity. The measure was announced on 4th of October, after the Hong Kong witnessed widespread violence on 1st of October which was the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China.

Ms Lam stated the violence was “destroying the city” and authorities could not “just leave the situation to get worse and worse.”

The ban comes into effect on Saturday.

The 2019 Hong Kong protests, also known as the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (ELAB) Movement, are an ongoing series of demonstrations in Hong Kong SAR which began with the aim to oppose the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill proposed by the Hong Kong government.
