Consumer Protection Act & Errant e-commerce firms: Indian Govt talks intense on errant e-commerce firms

Indian government is taking further initiations to strengthen online consumer rights in the country.

While addressing national conference of consumer fora, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, enabling customers to document legal claims against unlawful practices of sellers and fortifying consumer forums against the background of colossal development of e-business is the need of great importance to secure buyers.

With e-trade exchange set to increase, legislative intercession or legal claim ought to address the weakening of the jurisdiction idea in e-business platforms, Jaitley said.

As part of securing the consumers, the government is amending the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 to bring e-trade consumers under its ambit, Jaitley added.

He also said, class action suits can be documented by groups of individuals too when they get swindled by sellers.

The 1986 act served us well and now it is the time to achieve the following stage, finance Minister said.

The new initiations by Indian government may bring confidence in the country’s e-commerce industry, as consumers are facing bunch of difficulties with sellers and their swindling approach.
