Li Xiaong did this unthinkable so that doctors could assess the maneuvering skills in his fingers while they were operating on him.

The musician had developed a neurological condition which left him unable to write music or play guitar. His operation was done in Shenzhen in Southern China which involved the doctors planting battery powered electrodes in his brain. These batteries would last for about 10 years.

The musician had to stay conscious during the entire operation to help doctors plant medical electrodes in his brain that control the muscles in his fingers.
